Depression for too many people has become an unfortunate way of life. More and more people are suffering with depression, not knowing how to get out from under the heavy dark cloud of despair. Unfortunately, the medical system isn’t doing much to help other than doling out prescriptions for antidepressants; and for the many people who don’t want to be introduced to man-made chemicals, their depression stays untreated.
Talking about pharmaceuticals, did you know that there is not a test of any kind that tests for the need for antidepressants? None.
When a person is depressed, there is an imbalance of chemicals and neurotransmitters being produced – namely serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. If the brain is creating a deficient amount of chemicals naturally, antidepressants may help restore a balance to a persons mood, allowing them to feel again.
However, if the cause is situational, that is, the loss of a job, change of relationship, death of a loved one, etc., the chemical imbalance is most likely not going to be fixed by antidepressants. We often find that when a person is unnecessarily on antidepressants they describe a feeling like walking in a fog or being disconnected to life. The induced chemicals create more of a flat-line of emotions, no highs and no lows.
So if drugs are not the answer what is?
Well, NLP is a great choice for working with and overcoming depression. Both chemical deficient depression and situational. You see, with NLP you will be able to reboot the nervous system in a way that can kick-start the appropriate levels of chemical release, thus balancing the chemicals naturally. Additionally, if the depression is situational, NLP will help you to revaluate past experiences to let go of the old emotions, store the learnings to be more empowered and step into new states and emotions.
Even if the cause of the depression is unknown, but if you haven’t always been depressed, learning NLP will provide you with the skills to unpack the unconscious patters and make changes at a deep level which will automatically influence the creation of chemicals.
Unlike many other forms of psychotherapy, NLP pays specific attention to a person’s desired state. Instead of simply understanding your depression, where it comes from and providing some coping strategies to live with it – NLP takes it a step further asking “what do you want instead”.
If a person has been living with chronic depression, being able to even ascertain a desired state may take a while. And that’s OK – because depression, the imbalance of chemical and neurotransmitter creating and distribution can be amended by getting to know the structure of it and using the unconscious mind to make a change for the better.
You will also be developing NLP skills to help other people change their programing and overcome their depression too.
